Framing Facts
ACID FREE MATERIALS; I
can't stress enough, the need to use acid free materials in all of your framed
prints . This week a client brought in a fabulous framed print to have
the mats replaced. (didn't like the color anymore). On examination it
was very clear that the mats were not the same color they once were. ( looked
faded and pale) This was not the fault of exposure to sunlight !
It was caused by the acid being given off by the mats and yes you guessed it,
the backing under the print, which was paper faced foam core. These
things had damaged the colors in the print also due to acid bleeding
through.
Here is the sad part... this
print has a secondary market value of over $10,000.00 ! Only, however,
if it is in MINT CONDITION. Due to the acid affected
condition of this print it would be hard to recover even 30% of it's value.
Folks, that's a loss to the owner of over $7,000.00!
My Theory is ... if it's
worth framing and displaying, it's worth doing right! The cost
differential is minimal and it could make you money.
ACID COMES FROM?
When a tree is alive it has component living in it called "Lignin.
This changes, once the tree is cut, into an acid. So any thing made
from the tree... i.e.. frames, pulp into paper and cardboard, will off gas
this acid. Some paper products are buffered by mixing a neutralizing
product into the paper mix. The idea is to get the PH of the paper as
close to neutral as possible, and it works. The problem is that it does
not work indefinitely. The answer is to use products that have no acid
in them to start with .. i.e.. cotton linters, and or cotton fibers.
These have no acids and are considered to be preservation products, known as
"Rag" mats. The same holds for the backing, it
too has a cotton layer on the foam center....Acid Free.
I hope this is information you
can use to preserve your art as a thing of beauty as well as an
investment. Please don't hesitate to drop me an email with any concerns.
